One of the goals of Femme Flex Friday was to educate bodybuilding and fitness fans on topics relevant to the women's side of the sport. One topic that surrounds a lot of mystery and excitement is the area of wellness. That excitement grew by leaps and bounds when it was announced that the new category would be added to the 2021 Olympics.
"FFF" co-presenters Alina Popa and Whitney Jones dedicated this week's episode to this topic and had two guests who are well connected to wellness: IFBB professional Anne Luise Freitas and trainer Ricardo Pannain.
Many people refer to Brazil as the birthplace of wellness because many athletes from this part of the world have such well developed lower bodies. Both shared that this was because of how easy it is to improve buttocks and legs.
"Over time, the girls began to see the value of upper body training, but for our body type it is much easier for us to develop the lower body."
Pannain is sought by many women to help prepare athletes for wellness. Popa asked him about the potential many of these clients had before they started working with them. He stated that he was open and honest about the journey that might lie ahead.
"Of course you can, but you have to train hard every week, of course you have to do physical things to get the size you need," he said.
Freitas is familiar with the struggle associated with a "wellness" body in bodybuilding. She competed in character in the early 2000s but had problems with an overwhelming lower body. After being urged by judges to advance to bodybuilding, she would win the 2009 women's bodybuilding world championship to become a professional.
"I was in great overall shape at that show, but even then my legs were still a lot bigger than my upper body," she told Popa. “When I started to put a lot of emphasis on my upper body, I got better. My condition was always great. "
Conditioning is a topic that confuses many athletes and fans interested in this new branch. Jones asked about the type of conditioning needed to win at a pro level.
“You have to find the right conditioning. You can't be over-conditioned. Of course, the more muscle you put in the lower body and you are conditioned, you need to have these details, ”said Pannain through Freitas, who translated. "You have to have muscles to show those nice glutes, nice hams, you know. This is something that customers sometimes come to us like," I want to be in the competitions in three months. " This is not possible. You have to work properly. "
